A complete field of 30 boats will line up along the Mina Seyahi Dubai breakwater for the first round of the brand-new Gulf X-Cat Series Powerboat Championship organised by the UAE Marine Sports Federation and being held under the aegis of the World Professional Powerboating Association (WPPA) in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) and Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), a press release said..The championship is a re-branded version of Class III racing with certain modifications. This weekend's inaugural race has been named the 'Mina Seyahi' X-Cat Series and 30 boats representing 15 countries will take to the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) waters today afternoon..One of the highlights of the new championship will be a record $1.6 million up for grabs for the winners in the six rounds planned so far, making it the largest prize fund in the world of powerboat racing.."It is our vision to create the biggest and the most successful international racing class in the world," observed Saeed Hareb, Managing Director, DIMC..The new series will be run as per rules and regulations laid down by the WPPA for Class III powerboat racing. Fitting of boats with transponders for the live virtual system to enable better race management and safety is among the most important amendment made by organisers to the previous class..The WPPA will also allow the Mercury 300hp Optimax EPA engines eligible to race in this series provided the boats carry the same weight as the Class III vessels with the 2.5 litre Mercury engines.
